CIAO! I’M YING

My Italian friends thought I was so little that they called me Piccola Ying. I was raised in the dusty sunshine of Kuala Lumpur, left the safe shores of my home for the world at 18 and have never looked back since.

In between, I've created my own charmed kind of life where I'd relied on intuition, kindness of strangers and the magic of serendipity. I have backpacked, lived a jet set lifestyle and had worked on Italian cruise ships for 5 years. When I'm not wandering, I write.

Back in the hey days, I was known as the one who’d quit my job to travel the world. When I was on the road, I was free. Free to be whoever I wanted to be, free to go wherever I wanted to go, free to put on different hats and experience different lives. When the going gets tough, I just gotta pack and head somewhere else. It was marvellous to do this for a while.

Now that I’m a mom, there is no quitting this job. When the going gets tough, you just got to suck it up. There’s also a different kind of joy though. Joy in the mundane and the ordinary. Joy in the sameness of the everyday life. Joy in the right here right now. A large part of my reality now involves watching a little human grow and making sure that her needs are taken care of. It's sometimes easy to feel like a failure when things don't go right and sleep deprivation takes its toll. These days, in the midst of turmoil, I just have to remind myself to breathe. Remind myself that the nasty thoughts in my head are just... thoughts. They do not reflect my reality. My present reality is, we're safe, healthy, and are not hungry. That is both a privilege and a blessing. I never ever want to take that for granted.

Love in the time of Corona.
These two is what I'm thankful for. ♥️ Before Covid-19 became a global pandemic and hand sanitizers and masks were in trend, we were lucky enough to have travelled back to Malaysia for lil C’s first Chinese New Year celebration. Normally we would have stayed at our family home but this time, without air-conditioning and a bigger bed in my childhood room, we had to look for a more suitable place. We stayed 2 nights at the ANSA Suite of ANSA Hotel and had an amazing time. A full review of our stay up on the Tiny Wanderer blog soon. Stay tuned!

What is a home? Is it somewhere where you feel saf

What is a home? Is it somewhere where you feel safe? Is it somewhere you return back to again and again after spending most of your time elsewhere? Is it wherever you go, where your heart is?

For the longest time in my 20s, I had a hard time finding home. The irony was, my familial home no longer felt like home so I fled to find a replacement. I didn't want my background and education to define me, so I threw myself in far flung corners of the world and put on all sorts of hats to decide, is this who I want to be? Can I be this person or do this job? I've tried a great many things in my life--some more interesting than others. But years of being here and there, this and that, I realised that the me I was looking for was right here, and so much more.
Now that I'm slowly building a home for my child, I can only wish that the home we've built for her, is somewhere she can always come back to. Somewhere where, when she's tired and needs a rest after her journeys or adventures, she knows that she can always return. Her home will be our home.

Traveling is easy when you don't have to lug a wha

Traveling is easy when you don't have to lug a whale in the middle to go everywhere. These days I've come to accept the limitations of movement and energy. If there's an award for the world's slowest moving person, I'd win it. At 25 weeks pregnant, I was still running for the bus. But now, at 36 weeks, I'm more like waddling towards the bus stop. If the bus doesn't wait, there's nothing I can do but wait for the next one. It's terribly inconvenient but I think I'm honing patience for the impending motherhood. Wish me luck!

Wandering through the charming old town of #Valldemossa while I was 27 weeks pregnant. It was our one last 'let's go somewhere before the little one gets here'. But don't get me wrong. We will not stop travelling just because we're going to have a baby, but how we travel will definitely change for sure. For what it's worth, I can't wait for our lil one to join us in our adventures.

Remember that time when we were just two friends who went on a random weekend getaway to Tioman island? When the rest couldn't make it but we went anyway? And how that morning, while I sit on the blanket, watching the tide come in and enjoying the morning sun on my skin, you went to the cafe and brought me coffee. You could have just asked me to go with you to the the cafe and drink them there but no, you let me lie on my blanket while you fetched piping hot Kopi Panas back. And together, we watched the waves lapping up the shore. And after that, there was no turning back. And here we are, on another beach, in another country (we've been to so many together that I've lost count of them all), still drinking coffee together and looking towards the future together. .

It was one of those trips where we decided to just get those cheap tickets from @ryanair and then go! It was a little trickier this time since I now have a full time job and didn't know if my boss would approve my leave 4 days before departure! Thankfully she did and somewhere about midnight, we emerged bleary eyed at the airport of Mallorca. Was it a little stressful to work 8 hours and then fly out to Mallorca? Yes. Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY!

Most people would think working in cafes or restaurants are beneath them. Why should they after all, when they're armed with degrees of sorts and climbing the career ladder is the only worthy goal? Let me tell you this, working in the service industry can be rewarding. It allows you to connect with people first hand. It teaches you endurance, improvisation and multi-tasking. It trains you to solve problems on the go. And apart from humility and patience, it gives you good exercise! I've worked in cafes and restaurants in London, Melbourne and Perth. The jobs were fast-paced and the shifts were long, but in the end I learnt that the smallest things can put the biggest smiles on people's faces. .

It wasn't easy to find but we found it. The Blue C

It wasn't easy to find but we found it. The Blue Church stands in the eastern part of the Old Town, which was unusually far away for a landmark so famous. Still we were glad that we found it because the building is curiously blue. It stands out in a neighbourhood which was drab and filled with grey Soviet style buildings. How much do you pack when you go on holidays? 🎒What do you bring with you? As you can see, I've been wearing pretty much the same few pieces that you find on my other pics of Budapest. That's because that was pretty much all I brought with me. Probably along with another one or two other tops and a pair of jeans for the colder days. Doesn't make me much of the #ootd Instagrammer but it sure as hell made my backpack so much lighter and easier to move around with. There were also some weekend city breaks where all I packed fit into this lil backpack you see in this pic. That's when I usually leave behind my hairdryer. .
